Often, I was told that my poverty was simply the result of circumstances—and for years, I accepted that explanation without question. Then I encountered the opening verse of the Bible: “God created.” Those words sparked an awakening within me. In that moment, I realize poverty does not only emerge from circumstances; at times, we also create and sustain it through our own patterns of behavior.

The Book of Proverbs brings many of these patterns into the light. In this article, I share twelve of them—each with a simple meaning to help us recognize them in our lives, and begin making wiser choices.
