Often, I was told that my poverty was simply the result of circumstances—and for years, I accepted that explanation without question. Then I encountered the opening verse of the Bible: “God created.” Those words sparked an awakening within me. In that moment, I realize poverty does not only emerge from circumstances; at times, we also create and sustain it through our own patterns of behavior.
The Book of Proverbs brings many of these patterns into the light. In this article, I share twelve of them—each with a simple meaning to help us recognize them in our lives, and begin making wiser choices.
1. Laziness
“He who has a slack hand becomes poor, but the hand of the diligent makes rich” – Proverb 10:4, NKJV. Laziness guarantees our pockets stay empty.
2. Love of Pleasure
“ He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.” Proverb 21:17, NRSV. Here’s the hard truth: chasing pleasure nonstop without real work keeps our pockets empty.
3. Ignore Instructions
“Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but he who heeds reproof is honored.” proverb 13:18, NRSV. Our stiff-necked pride and rejection of guidance are driving us straight into poverty.
4. Poor Planning
“ The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, But those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.” Proverb 21:5, NKJV. Poverty thrives when we move without proper planning or foresight.

5. Drunkenness and Excess
“ For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe man with rags.” Proverb 23:21, NKJV. We must always remember: overindulgence drains our hard-earned money fast.
6. Worthless Pursuits
“He who tills his hand will have plenty of bread, But he who follows frivolity will have poverty enough” Proverb 28:19, NKJV. If we spend our time on fantasies and foolish pursuits, we’ll never escape poverty.
7. Wastefulness
“ He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.” Proverb 18:9, KJV. Our carelessness with money, time, and talent guarantees we’ll face financial disaster.
8. Lack of Vision
“Where there is no vision, the people perish…” Proverb 29:18 KJV. Without proper direction, we remain trapped in financial struggle.
9. Guaranteeing Other People Debt
“Be not one of those who give pledges, who become surety for debts.” Proverb 22:26 NRSV. Why should we take financial responsibility of others’ debt? That’s financial suicide!

10. Pride
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16;18 NKJV. Sadly, our pride stops progress and drags us into financial chaos.
11. Rushing into Wealth
“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathered by labour shall increase” Proverb 13:11 KJV. Trying to get rich fast, especially without financial knowledge, usually costs us dearly.
12. Neglecting Responsibility
“I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man without sense; and lo, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, and little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” Proverb 24:30-34, NRSV. We destroy resources when we fail to manage our responsibilities, causing us to slide into financial ruin.
As we’ve seen, poverty also stems from our habits. Flip our actions, embrace wise behavior, and we invite prosperity into our lives.
We all want financial freedom. But, we’ve seen it clearly: our habits—small choices, daily routines—can trap us in poverty without us even realizing it. Show us how this blog impacted your life by rating and donating according to the change you felt:
